PROJECT 3: ARTIST

Through further amendments to my design I have chosen another artist to display. I had originally decided on Dan Stafford, an artist from the UK, who's colour works were thought provoking and bright. However as my design on the Art Gallery has progressed, the concept of the gallery is more understated and subtle which suits my new artist, Michael Zavros.

Zavros is an Australian artist who's paintings are of a realist nature. His works highlight the concepts of beauty, in particular an obsession with fashion.

I am fascinated by his obsession with beauty and fashion and the way he has depicted these thoughts through his images. His paintings are transported images of photographs that have been altered.

He is interested in "rather what fashion imagery offers, which is usually a flight of fancy, a perfection of an idea, and highly aestheticised imagery"

ARCH 1201: PROJECT 2: ROOM AND NARRATIVE

Cardplayers in a Sunlit Room (1658) by Pieter De Hooch

My chosen painting is by Pieter De Hooch and portrays people enjoying a game of cards while people go about their everyday lives in the courtyard outside. There are an inter-connecting rooms through a transitional space.

The bright light that beams in through the large window beside the card table and the large door that takes you to the outside courtyard.
The cardplayers are on the right of the painting, giving the viewer an appreciation of the entire room, including the broken pipe, matches and cards that are on the floor. It seems to be early afternoon with each person enjoying the card game in the entertainment. The minimal decor depicts that the room is for leisure and socialising.

The eloquently dressed gentleman, standing, smoking his pipe, enjoying the card game, admiring the lady's cards, offering his thoughts

SITE CONTEXT

The site that I have chosen is based in NSW in the Hunter Valley. The region is dedicated to the production of wine and is a place of relaxation and enjoyment for all visitors. My space is designed as a place of congregation to reflect the same ambience and leisure as represented in the theme of the painting.

INITIAL SKETCHES

My initial sketches are below. These are based on the two rooms linked by the transient space. The space has been designed to bring people together and offer a distraction by the way of views on the site. The congregation of people has been incorporated into the design where I have come up with a "games room" as a place where all players would inhabit at their own leisure and keep coming back to. I have also tried to incorporate the influence of light in the site, recognising it's importance in the painting and the influence it has on the enjoyment of activities.
